It seems that I read a new story almost daily of a big corporation shifting jobs overseas in groups of the thousands. Not just blue collar factory/assembly jobs, but high-tech white collar jobs.

Reading stories such as Oracle to double its India work force, American programmers insulted as employers seek cheap labor, and Increasing export of white-collar jobs is cause for concern start to make me wonder if I’ve really picked the right profession. I think that decisions like these are very short-sighted. Sure, you’re going to save some money, however the quality of your products are going to go way down, not to mention that you’re biting the hand that feeds you by putting your own citizens out of work.

I think I’m in a decent enough niche market that perhaps I won’t be effected by this, at least in the next couple of years, but who knows what path this is leading us down.

Even having a lot of H1B’s is better than completely outsourcing work to India or Malaysia– the H1B’s will at least spend the money they earn in our country which will trickle down into our economy one way or another. I’m sort of mixed about the H1B practice myself, though. On one hand I know a couple of people here that are using it, and have a couple of people I wish could easily get them, but on the other hand, it sometimes seems to be an easy way out for corporations to get bodies.

I used to think working for a big corporation would be a pretty cool thing, but the more life I experience, the less attractive it becomes. As soon as I come-up with that product idea that I can execute on my own, I think it will be time to be my own boss.
