[...] When I was originally asked to join the board, I had some strong reservations about it for many reasons, but decided to give it a try for the purpose of helping out the community in a constructive way. For instance, I’d heard about a previous editorial board for the Linux Journal who all resigned at the same time, I think not compensating people who contribute to the magazine is completely unethical, and their website reminds me of a “warez” site where popups, videos, and all kinds of other annoying crap invade your computer. Despite all of that, I assumed that being part of an editorial board would help voice developers concerns like “Your site makes the baby Jesus cry, make it stop!”, “What kind of monkeys are editing the articles?”, and “Why do you keep stealing people’s content and publishing it as your own?”.
[...] I had other stuff to do on Sunday other than sit around on the computer, but I did spend a considerable amount of time responding to comments both on Slashdot as well as my own site. Surprisingly I didn’t get any comments which I was forced to delete. I did however have some other strange experiences which I recently wrote about. [...]

[...] One thing which has already been discussed is some of the poor choices of aggregating blog entries as articles without author’s permission, and I have also been a bit critical of Sys-Con previously myself. As Jeff already posted, this is something which seems to be in the past and weren’t part of the daily operations of the print version of the CFDJ. However, I think the new board will continue the evolvement of the magazine since Simon took over as Editor in Chief, and we’d love to hear any additional feedback or suggestions (including article proposals of course) about the publication you’d like to provide. Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]

I think their content was probably more relevant before CF'ers started blogging. Most people that do groundbreaking things within CF usually write a post about it now.

And yeah, it's way too expensive. I think it's meant to be more of a "expense the cost at work" type magazine than something to subscribe to at home.

Personally, I have rarely found the content in sys-con publications to be worth the prices on the covers.

Suffice it to say, I too have had my fair share of bad vibes from sys-con as former Flash Editor for MXDJ. I concur with your mixed feelings towards sys-con as I have them too. I went with my gut, though, and just severed ties as best I could. I still get emails, some random, others from potential writers even though I'm no longer affiliated with them in any way, via an old sys-con email address I was given.
