CostCo Harmonics Laminate Flooring

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been tempted by the Harmonics laminate wood flooring at CostCo, right? My first dog did quite a bit of damage to my carpet, and the current one has had a couple of accidents (for having her for 1.5 years now, she’s honestly done really well), so in general the cheap crappy carpet in my place is pretty much shot. I’ve always liked wood flooring, and laminate flooring is supposed to be better with pets as far as not getting scratched-up is concerned. While doing research about it, I found a whole ton of information about the stuff you see at CostCo.

I’d say my takeaway from my research is that if you pick it up while it’s on sale, it ends up being only around $1.50 s/f INCLUDING padding, and overall it’s a pretty decent system. Sounds like it’s fairly easy to do yourself as well as long as you have someone there to help you cut pieces, etc, so you don’t have to get up and down all the time.

  1. From my experience you want to go with a little higher grade. My first attempt was so scratched (before I was finished) that I actually ended up covering it again with carpet. Good insulation though!

I had a really good experience in another house with laminate flooring from Pergo Presto. Held up perfect with three large dogs. And it was a cinch to install. And the price was right. I bought it from Home Depot three years ago.

  2. Pergo is the way to go. Rachel put it in the classroom downstairs over a year ago. The constant abuse of six lil bastards has not produced a scratch yet.

  3. Yeah, I’ve read good stuff about the Pergo– if I planned on being here for awhile I’d probably go with it.

Really the only reason I’m looking at this stuff is because I know I’m going to have to replace my carpet, but I don’t plan on living here much longer (1-2 years tops). It does come with a 25 year warranty (and supposedly if you’re a CostCo member, it has a lifetime warranty, though I’d check with them beforehand if/when I get that serious about it). It would be cheaper than re-carpeting provided I did it myself, and I enjoy doing stuff like that anyway. Though I do know someone who installs carpet, so I’ll probably check with him to see what his prices are like…

Really I should just buy one box of it sometime and/or get a sample of it to see what it takes to scratch it up. From everything I’ve read about it, it looked like you should avoid the cherry flooring which was manufactured in Belgium because it scratched easily, etc, but the oak color was good stuff for the price.

I’m seriously thinking about Costco laminates (oak) and some concerns that the underlayment polyfoam. Is the polyfoam in the installment kit reduce the noise and insulate in very hot/cold months? Anybody have any experience with the noise reduction underlayment products? (Living in central TX)

I have the Harmonics and it is awsome. I have a rottwieler and a black lab and they run on it all the time and there is no sign of wear at all. I have couchs that the wife has slide across the floor and it is perfect. I nmy experiance from purchaseing the Hormonics floring it is a good product.

The Costco Harmonics is excellent. I have installed approx. 1200 sq. foot of the cherry in my house. Easy to clean and no flaws. I have 2 very large long haired German Shepherds who had destroyed the hardwoods from running. Tore up the hardwoods and the carpet in many of the rooms. Replaced with the Harmonics and everyone raves about the appearance. Don’t waste your money with Dupont or Pergo. I have used the Dupont cherry trim peices from Home Depot and they match perfect!

We installed the Royal Cherry over the weekend, and overall it was a very easy product to work with. The only problems we encountered were with the edges and surface occassionally chipping when we needed to use a pullbar to tap the panels in, and not the plastic tapping block.

We have 7 full boxes available if anyone is still looking for some.

We love the Harmonics Laminate Wood Flooring. We will, however, sell all that we have and buy the newest oak flooring from Costco OR purchase more of the premium oak if anyone has any left they’d like to sell. We need approximately 400 sf to finish our main floor area.
We have 2 unopened boxes and approx. 300 sf that has been laid that we would gladly pull up and sell if there is an interested party after that. Either way, we will continue to go with the Harmonics brand. It’s good stuff. Email – sammybgood@gmail.com

Opened boxes are pointless really. Depending on your location and your relative humidity. The boards from an opened box will swell, causing it to be hard or impossible to install. I wouldn’t waste my time or money on and opened box of materials.

As for quarters rounds or some other type of molding for around door casings. If installed correctly there is no need for them. All door casings should be undercut far enough to allow for about 3/16 of an inch of board to slip under.

The installation kit foam is not for insulating against cold or heat. It is used as a moisture membrance to keep moisture from coming up from underneath. When i say moisture though i am refering to small amounts. If your house has a pond underneath it, it will do nothing to stop that amount of water. It is also used to help quiet the flooring when it is walked on.

Seems like a lot of folks got caught by Costco closing out certain colors. I, too, have been had. I bougt the royal cherry about 2 yrs ago and as a typical do-it-yourselfer, I just got to installing the floor and ran 3 boxes short. I just removed a portion of the floor and finished my kitchen with a Quick-Step product (www.quick-step.com). Find a local dealer and you will most likely find a match. You will need to install a “T” transition piece b/c the T&G’s don’t match. Also, you can buy your trim and claner there as well and not deal with Harmonics and shipping. Also, be warned, some of Harmonics parts do not match the dwgs and customer service told me to find what I needed at any local dist…I have some left over Royal Cherry that was installed for about a month. It is in fine condition. You can use this, just let it acclimate to you house b/f installing. Respond if interested. Thanks

Having visited 7 costco’s over the Thanksgiving weekend, I have come to the conclusion that it can be a risky situation to use Costco, despite the great quality and pricing. It’s too late for me, since I’m almost finished with my project.

Most Costco’s do not have the Maple Cabin or Maple Select. What seems to be available a lot is the Brazilian Cherry and Oak (to a lesser extent) – perhaps due to taste or just over-ordering. The Costco sure have a lot of the new Bamboo hardwood flooring. So if you like these 3 colors, you are ok.

However if you’re doing Maple, Royal Cherry – be warned to calculate your needs and if the available boxes are not enough at your local 2 or 3 Costcos, don’t even start with the dependency on Costco Harmonics. There is no special ordering, interstore shipping or any support!

I have wasted my Thanksgiving learning this on my Maple Select — hope others have save their future weekends and projects by not repeating my mistake!

Be forewarned when using Costco laminate flooring! Great product but check first that you have enough before starting project.

    To Jill:

You can buy enhanced cherry by quick-step. It is manufactured by the same company that makes Harmonics. I have the two butted together with a “Tee” strip and you can’t tell them apart. The two brands do not connect because the joints are diff. If you use them in diff rooms, then you will not know the diff.
I did get a call from Bob and he has three boxes – I would have to dig for his number if you need it.
I have 4 boxes of Royal Cherry – 1 new, 1 used (installed for 4 weeks is defined as used but looks new), 1 box with cut pieces about in half, 1 box with cut pieces around a third the length. You have to cut them to fit and these will work – just a little spendy to ship. Let me know if you need them…
    Thanks

  62. I stumbled across this board last night looking for info on the Harmonics Flooring from Costco. I saw the posts from so many looking for Brazillian Cherry and it got me a little worried about not being able to get enough to finish my 10 year old girl’s room. I bought all the local Costco had, and was assured they would get more for the sale next month. In the mean time, we decided to do something a little differnt and since my girl thinks it is so “awesome” I thought I would share it. She has a small room, and we are going to border it with the dark Cherry and lay one strip (47.25″ x 105″) of the very light Cabin Maple down the middle with the planks running 90º to border planks. Kind of a rectangle inside a square. You’re not supposed to line up the ends because it looks like sections, but in this case that is what we want. So if you’re short of the dark colored stuff and have an area you want to make “awesome” looking, you might be able to finish your project with stuff that is readily available. Now the 13 year old says she wants her room alternately striped light/dark when we do it in February. I am not so sure about that one!

    Good luck!

PS – I am not a software developer or engineer, but thanks for letting me post on your forum.

Good news, the mystery is solved for the “Premium Oak”. After taking a “premium oak” plank to every flooring store around, I found an exact match.

It is made by Columbia Flooring and is Columbia Clic in White Oak Way Natural (WOW301).

We have a 12 foot wide opening from our existing house to our new addition. We purchased 35 boxes to complete the addition and were able to simply continue laying flooring as if it were the Harmonics brand. You can not tell the difference – the sheen, pattern, color, etc is all the same.

We purchased the product online (floorshop.com) for $2.18 sq ft and picked it up at a local distribution warehouse so we wouldn’t be charged for shipping.

I hope this can help someone else…

Since Lisa mentioned Columbia Flooring I decided to check out their website. I’m going to agree that these Harmonics are made by them instead of Quick Step (they made the older Costco flooring). The installation directions at Columbia are almost word for word what is on the side of the Harmonics installation kit box. The photos are exactly the same. The directions for Quick Step are different. Good sleuthing Lisa!

Hi, I have found the PERFECT match for the Harmonics Premium Oak. It is the Columbia Clic, White Oak Way, Natural #WOW301. After looking at the panels I honestly believe it is the same stuff, made in Belguim, etc.
we are very pleased with the find. If you are in the greater Spokane, WA area you can call Bob Norwood at 509-747-2295. He is the one who ordered this for us.
I also notified the Northside Costco, in N. Spokane about the flooring. Good Luck to all who are still searching. If you are looking for other color matches I would still check on the COlumbia Clic. The locking systems is identical to the Harmonics.

When I installed my costco harmonics laminate,
I had left some space from the wall.(upto 1″ at some places) Now, I am trying to put some molding to cover up, the space between the wall and the edge of the laminate flooring.

Can I just try screwing the molding to the laminate,
floor. I may have to drill holes in the laminate floor, and use screws shallow enough, since the laminate itself is not that thick. Does drilling holes near th edge of the laminate, make it fragile?

I am pretty sure this stuff is made by Quikstep, Eligna series. They have a cherry that exactly matches my braz. cherry. Checked on their trim at Great Floors, 7 ft piece of t-moulding is $45. I need 5. Add in some quarter round and end-moulding, cost will be more than the actual floor cost! Let me know if anyone has ordered from Harmonics and what the prices were.

    Michelle–
Try using a diluted vinegar solution to clean the residue off of the floor. I use the diluted solution to clean my Harmonics flooring and it seems to work better than any commercially available product. To be prudent, try a small spot in a less visible area in case there is some chemical reaction between the old cleaner and the vinegar.

Time to look stupid: My husband and I are installing Harmonics in our livingroom. We installed laminate in our dining room a few years ago with no problem (a different brand), but I’ll be darned if we can get this floor to lie flat once you get to the second row of planks. Is there some secret to getting the planks to lie flat once they’re connected?

    Thanks.

  124. Antonio Nassar said

If you live in Southern California and need an equivalent of 9 boxes of Harmonics Royal Cherry let me know. I could not finish the project I had in mind because Costco does not have any more of the Royal Cherry flooring. So, you can come and take a look to see if you want to buy what I have.

  125. Deanne @124 – If you honestly don’t know, then it’s not stupid to ask, is it? If this is your first time installing Harmonics… do you know that you’ve got to “click” the planks into place? It’s hard to explain without actually being there to show you. You tilt the plank, attach it along the long edge to the previous row of planks, and push in and down. There should be a “click” — not always audible, but you should definitely feel it through your fingers — and the plank will slip into place, flush and flat with the first one. If the second row is not lying flat, then my guess is that you haven’t done this.

  126. Lucy said

Deanne- I think we’re having the same problem. I am installing this in my condo, which I discovered has a concrete slab sub-floor. The floor is uneven. More than 1/8 inch for 3 feet, like the directions advise against? I don’t know. We just started today, got three rows into it and the boards are not staying snapped together.

The boards are making the “snap” when they’re put together at an angle, but when you go to press the board down, the seam pops back out.

Our friend put in “Quick Step” flooring, which is identical to Harmonics and he said he had a part of his floor that gradually dipped down 4 inches (!) and he stuck some shims in there and it was fine. So why are we having this problem?

I think we have a solution! We called the Harmonics customer service and once they got back to us (mid-day, the next day, so be patient!) they suggested lining the unopened boxes of flooring, end-to-end, down the length of the first row to provide even pressure…we did that and it worked! We’ve kept the row of unopened boxes on that very first row, and also made a second row that we slide forward each time we complete a row.

    Here’s a picture:
    http://img213.imageshack.us/im.....861jf6.jpg

We’re now done with that room you see there and into the dining room, the other part of our “L-shaped” room. Then we just have to do that little hallway you see in the background.

I have 6 golden retrievers that constantly run on harmonics laminate on concrete for two years with no signs of scratches or wear. If you don’t believe the durabilty take a key and try to scratch it rubbing it back and forth.

The floor has to be pretty flat I was lucky my concrete was not that bad just had to grind some cement around the floor vents. I heard you can use a liquid leveler to even it out. Just pour it out and it will even out and let dry.

For the next rows i like to piece two or three together and then connect them. A little tricky but thats three less pieces you need to hammer in each row.

I had mine professionally installed and he pointed out two common errors with installation.

First all panels should overlap on the next row so that the joints do not match up. This may be a reason for the panels comming apart after putting them in place.

Second attach the panels on the long side and then use pressure or whatever you are using to tighten the joint on the small side of the panel. If you do it the opposite, attempting to use pressure or tapping on the long side you will likely damage the joint and the panels will also come apart on you.

Someone mentioned on this page (way above this) that you do NOT need to use transition moldings (like endcaps or 1/4 round, etc.) when installing laminate flooring. THAT IS WRONG BECAUSE YOUR FLOOR MAY BUCKLE! It is imperative that your laminate floor does NOT touch any wall surface or door jamb or sliding glass door frame or ANYTHING! If it does, even at one point, then your floor might buckle. You must have a bare minimum of 1/4″ expansion gap EVERYWHERE and more is needed for long hallways or any job that has a lot of square footage. Laminate floors are called “floating floors” because they need to expand and contract in all directions.

I was in the business for about 10 years and have professionally installed thousands and thousands of square feet of laminate flooring and have had to bail out many homeowners because their laminate floor buckled due to some “licensed” contractor ignoring the expansion gap rule.

  164. Doug said

Hi, I’m strongly considering installing the Harmonics from Costco. I have a construction background, so I think I can handle it.

I have a few questions,so I’ll list them in a moment. I have carpet on plywood, so I plan to start by removing as much furniture as possible, then rip up the carpet, pad, tackstrip, and baseboards, and discarding them. I expect the plywood beneath to be good and not need any leveling or filling. there is a basement on the floor below this level with a staircase leading down, and another leading up ( next to it).

My area is a living room/dining room that is like one big room. It’s about 22′ by 22′ minus the stair area. I look at it as being two areas of 22X12 and 14X10 for 384sf. The material is 17.18 sf to a box, so I figure about 25 boxes ( 425 sf) maybe a little more, and 3 boxes of the pad (450 sf).

I have few obstacles. I plan to start on the long wall, that way my boards will run at a 90 degree angle to a sliding glass door, instead of parallel to it. There is a heating vent in the floor by the door, so I’ll have some pieces that are only about 6 inches long between the vent and door. My only other obstacle is a decorative column about 2 feet from my starting point, it’s about 14″ square.

What kind of metal would I use for about a 3 ft section where the wood meets a tiled entry ? Currently carpet meets tile. What goes there and provides the clearance needed ?

I don’t have much to cut out around stairs to get wood under the trim. Do I need that special undercut saw, or will a handsaw do ?

Can this product be installed on stairs ? I want to do the 384sf, then decide wether or not to do the stairs with it. Where should I end the wood when approaching the stairs going down ?

How long might this area take working by myself ?

I’ve read it’s OK to install part, then move stuff onto it,correct ?

I plan to just put new moulding from Lowe’s or somewhere up once the floor is in, is that how it’s done, or is there some special kind ?

    Thanks for any replies !

I am surprised at how many people keep putting in the cheap laminate, and searching for more boxes to fix or repair it.
It is best to put in QUALITY laminate, so that you aren’t constantly repairing or having to be careful with your CHEAP floors.
There is a free guide I found on LaminateFloorsCheap.com, the really helps you determine the quality floors from the cheap ones. Don’t buy off color and price per square foot alone. So many people ruin their floor before it is even installed.
We love our floor and don’t have ONE scratch or dent in it, because we bought quality flooring the first time from Rustic Elegance. My son even peed in a corner and it sat for who knows how long and didn’t leak in the seems or cause ANY damage :)
So I would pull out the cheap stuff and get some quality laminate that you can do once and be done with LOL

For those of you out there that need Harmonics Royal Cherry, there are alternatives. Do a Google search for “Quick Step Cherry SFU007″. I have ordered samples of this product and it is identical to the Royal Cherry. There are a couple of websites out there that do sell it or you can go to http://www.quick-step.com to find a local retailer to save on shipping. Good luck.

I started installing Harmonics – put down about 75 sf. My Rottwieler and German Shepherd both slipped and fell on it. So, I never finished the intended install of several rooms.

I have: 19 cartons of Royal Cherry #RC201 and 22 cartons of Premium Oak #PO101. It’s been stored in my living room since purchase. I also have two unopened Harmonics install kits. And, I’ll be un-installing the material I put down. It’s still in good condition – that’s one thing I will say, it’s held up very well where there is constant foot and pet traffic. I can’t complain about that. I wish I could use it in my whole house.
I’ll sell this (cheap) if someone wants it.

I see alot of people needing small quantities of flooring. Make a reasonable offer for it all or portions. If anyone wants pictures or more info, email me.
Any shipping that needs to be done will be up to the buyer to make the arrangements and pay for it. Just be aware – this stuff weighs 25 lbs per carton.
I’m in the Sacramento, Calif area if anyone wants to pick it up. Contact me at: LJS@dishmail.net – please put the word “Harmonics” or “Flooring” in the subject line so I can screen emails.

My wife and I were looking into putting this in our home. The 35 yr warranty was almost a sure selling feature, but by the look of things how the heck does a company offer a warranty when it discontinues the product??? Doesn’t make any sense and sounds like some cheap flooring that would require you to purchase double of whatever you put down just incase you have to repair or replace part of the floor. This company harmonics sounds pretty crappy to me…

  219. can I instal maple laminant, harmonics, over carpet?

You all seem like you’ve figured out how to use CostCo’s Harmonics Laminate flooring in one way or another. I am considering it for my house–kitchen, hallway, and one bedroom. What’s the scoop on this product? Would you use this again? What about finish pieces such as T-connectors or carpet reducers? And what is this about needing a special hammer? I haven’t purchased yet, but am considering it. Your experienced guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

Please HELP!! Does anyone have 3 to 5 boxes of Harmonics Brasilian Cherry laminate? Please e-mail me to vitalyshtulman@yahoo.com. Thanks!

  223. I have only read one post regarding the ‘Finish pieces’, for the Harmonics flooring carried by Costco. A reader in 06 did mention correctly that this is a Quick-Step, manufactured product. Alote of Manufacturers make special items just for Costco, like their batteries, and pots and pans. You can even see the Transition and trim options on Quick-Steps website. There stair tread ideas are great. For the first time installer that needs an idea just how the install goes, I would highly recommend a “How to install a laminate floor”, DVD purchase at their local Home Improvement store. It does not have to be by the same manufacturer whose product they are installing, it will cover how the tools are used and the tips and technics to follow. This laminate is not a product normally carried at Home Depot. It is carried at flooring stores. I’ve been able to get better deals at small flooring stores than any Home Depot for tile, lamenate and carpet. Plus you can’t beat Costco’s return policy, just keep your reciept and you can return any unused boxes no matter how long. But I would recommend buy 10% over for shortage during the install (these are the oops and ohohs), and have 10% extra for future spill damage or insidentals. Good Luck!

  224. Dave Holliday said

NOT on top of carpet,,,,,2 special tools are pull bar and a tapblock(can be made w/wood),,,for the $$$$ you can’t beat it. If you damage any other floor I challege you to show me a good patch with that (carpet, wood, tile etc) atleast with this if you can find it the change is minimal to nonexistant and you just dissassemle and re-assembe.VOILA!!! It’s still kinda like cubic ziconia though it has some plusses.

we bought and installed the costco laminated flooring last year in family room, living room, dining room, and hall way, and cannot begin to tell you how much we love it. In the beginning our jack russell terrior slipped and sled when she was running thru the house, now she’s more careful lol. Costco now has the flooring on sale again, so we’ve decided to do our three bedrooms and den, and hopefully costco will have a color that will match to our already installed rooms, they are cabin maple, and i see that is not one of those listed on sale. We had 1/2 of a box left over so i cut off a piece and will keep my fingers crossed when we go looking tomorrow. Again I cannot begin to let everyone know wonderful flooring and big savings.

  266. Tim said

does anyone have the $5 off coupon? Could it be scanned and emailed to Ladder3BFD@aol.com. Thanks Tim

  267. bbcoop said

The vintage chestnut floor looks GREAT-my husband installed it in 2 bedrooms (which was about 17 boxes) in 2 days-he said its easy, but you do need to take the time to make sure you are staggering and installing correctly to get the right look. A table saw is certainly useful (might borrow one if you don’t have one) I’m shocked how much bigger the rooms look vs the carpet!

We also have a 110lb hyper lab retriever who has been jumping and stretching and playing ball in the rooms and not a scratch in sight…I had read harmonics is the way to go w/dogs, and it seems to be true in our case.

I’m getting ready to order the molding from the harmonics website, I called the warehouse at costco to see if it was cheaper through them, but I think they must just give the harmonics number as listed on the box/web address (1-888-459-9220 and http://www.haromonics-flooring.com). Looks like the molding is going to run about one hundred, but it will look nice when complete.

In response to the vapor barrier…We did buy their approved installation kids/vapor barrier before installing on plywood floors (upstairs) b/c it voids the warranty if you don’t, so that might be something to think about if you are considering other options…he LOVED the plastic thing you used to hit to tighten the planks in place–he said it made the job much easier than the first time he had installed
these kind of floors (only once before).

We never had the $5 coupon I don’t think and I’m not sure why, but the guy at the service desk grabbed a book and ripped one out for us so we could get a price adjustment which was big on 17 boxes–pretty much covers the cost of the moldings–you might try that, I found that one of our costco stores was much more willing to help us than the other, the other store insisted we haul all 17 boxes back (the coupon came out 4 days after our purchase) and the other store said thats silly, we’ll adjust it as long as you have the original receipt, you can always check store to store on those things.

    Good luck on your flooring!

  268. William said

I also installed harmonics flooring from costco, after only three months I too noticed it is very easily damaged by water i.e. come in the front door with snow on your feet, drop a ice cube or any of the such, if the water is left on the floor for any amount of time and gets in the cracks where the planks are butted together, you now have a trashed floor,

In summary, stay clear of harmonics flooring and or any other brand of the same or like quality, i.e. you get what you pay for, pay now or pay later, go with the best money can by now.

I am in the process if filing a complaint now with Costco and harmonics flooring

    >>>
We installed harmonics flooring from costco and we are not happy with the results after two years of wear it looks awful and where water was spilled it has boiled up on the edges and ends. i need to know if others have had this happen.

Costco does is currently running a coupon for $5 off the Harmonics flooring. The coupon is good through March 31st. Executive members get the coupon book in the mail. Not all Coscto members get the coupon, but if you’re really nice, you may be able to get one from Member Services.

Those of you complaining about Coscto discontinuing a color, that’s the manufacturer, not Costco.

You Costco shoppers should be more savy. You should know better than to think any product will be there at a later date. The rule that savy Costco shoppers know is that if you want something, you better buy it when you see it and buy plenty. They don’t always carry the same product. It’s based on negotiating with various manufacturers that can offer the best price to you…the consumer. They keep their prices low this way. They have a very liberal return policy. You should buy a lot of extra boxes of the flooring and return what you don’t use. They’ll take it back.

  272. bbcoop said

IF you installed VINTAGE CHESTNUT, read post #238 by Matt before ordering your trimwork!!! It saved me $!

I wrote in my recent post that I was getting ready to order through harmonics, then luckily scrolled back and saw Matt’s post and decided to go to home depot and see the color, didn’t find sand hickory, but did find henna hickory which could just be a replacement name and it seemed close enough, although I wasn’t sure–I did order it b/c they had free shipping and it was about $15 a box vs the harmonics which was almost the same price for the product, but you get killed in shipping and handling–it saved me about 50% to do it this way!

We JUST rec’d it, very quick shipping and we are very pleased with the color match, thanks again to Matt for the money saving tip!

As for the water damage risk, for the look/feel of these laminates and the great price, its worth the risk to me…I do not anticipate any water damage as I only laid the flooring in bedroom upstairs and I would definitely buy extra packages for future use if I anticipated putting it in a high traffic area, especially by a door going to the exterior of the house. I will save some slats just in case anything happens to these just b/c I know I can’t expect it to be available even a few months from now since it was purchased at a warehouse club.

Hi all, We just bought the Vintage Chestnut for an office.
Q1-Does the flooring hold up to rolling office chairs (from CostCo, of course)?

Q2-We bought less than a week after the coupon. How did people get CostCo to grant the coupon pricing? Do I ask at the store?
There have been several times that they miss one of my coupons and I realized when I get home – they haven’t been very nice about giving me my $ back on a later trip when i bring the receipt in. I can’t imagine them giving me money for an expired coupon. We bought 12 boxes for one room, but if they grant me the coupon price, I might buy another 35 boxes for other rooms.

    Thanks!

  280. Well as far as I can tell Harmonics just screwed us all by changing the dimensions of the flooring sections; so now if you need replacement sections you have to replace the whole floor.
That’s the last time I buying their stuff and will always reccomend against Harmonics.

I’ve had my Harmonics flooring (from Costco) now for about 7 months. Like others, I was worried it wouldn’t hold up as well as the Pergo I have in my kitchen.

I was wrong. The Harmonics is JUST AS durable in my opinion and I LOVE it!

It’s been tested with rambuncious kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat, and lots of general family wear & tear. The Pergo we installed in the kitchen 6 years ago has worked great .. but I give full kudos to the Harmonics as well.

I fretted over the decision of which flooring to go with for the living room, dining room, and hallways forever it seems — but in the end, the decision to go with Harmonics was the right (and believe me, most economical) choice.

Put me on your list of VERY satisfied Harmonics laminate flooring customers! :-)

If my entry is timed right, this will be the 323rd blog concerning Harmonics flooring with 125 of them posted this year. Almost all of these entries are cries for help to find any existing boards that were discontinued. If you are researching laminate wood flooring to install in your home, please consider the challenges I am facing because of choosing to use this product.

Only one year ago I installed the Harmonics Cabin Maple in my living room and dining room. The price was great, it installed great, looked great, I was a happy camper…until my water heater leaked this August. I had to take up 1/3 of my beautiful new floor and needed to replace both the insulation and planks. I was surprised and disappointed to learn that Costco no longer carries the kind they sold to me, but was told that some of the stores still had the discontinued planks on hand in back. The clerk was very helpful and was soon able to identify which local stores still had some flooring in stock and I was able to buy what little I needed. I thought I was lucky. HOWEVER, I found that no one carries the plastic insulation anymore and when I contacted Harmonics, they basically said if Costco doesn’t have any on hand, you’re out of luck because we don’t make it anymore. For want of $60 worth or insulation it seemed I was stuck either finding a workable substitute for the insulation I needed or pay for an entirely new floor. Fortunately, this sheeting is not as unique as the colors of flooring are. I went to a large home improvement store and found a company called Precision Components who makes an insulation/moisture barrier sheet much like the one harmonics used to make. It’s a little wider than the stuff I originally used and the roll is only 33.3 ft long, but it is at least an option for those who are in a similar bind like I was. The cost was about $25 per roll vs. the harmonics $19.99 a roll. Using a non-Harmonics product will most certainly void the warranty, but then, the warranty is not really worth much in cases like this.

Be advised that on the label, the 25-year warranty Harmonics boasts does not cover for water damage if it comes from a flood, natural disaster, leaking pipe or appliance. So, basically, consumers are not covered for water damage under any circumstance that I can think of.

Overall, great product, although a non-existent backup plan for customers who take a chance on them. How sad. It’s a good thing customer loyalty is not something that matters to this manufacturer because I don’t see how they can be building any real brand equity when so much consumer trust is draining down such large a hole as the one I have experienced in their customer support.

I need 2-3 boxes of the Cabin Maple to replace some water damaged boards. My local Costco is not able to locate any in the NW US. crn62@yahoo.com

Installation is pretty slick once you bugger up about half the boards in your first couple of rows. I had to completely take over installation from my husband because he is too strong and that final “tap” into place damages the end of the piece. After completing 4 rooms and a hallway I have at least 2 boxes of damaged boards that would work in a very narrow space like a closet but otherwise were a complete waste. Also have to be careful not to leave too large a space at the walls because the boards do continue to move over time and you will get gaps between the boards in the middle of your floor after awhile. I was very disappointed with the finish pieces though as they are extremely light in color and don’t really match the wood effect in the flooring itself. I had better luck just getting some trim at Lowe’s without having to deal with shipping it.

Carpet One’s all over the country have picked up 3 colors of this 8mm laminate, that Costco unfortunatley could not afford to purchase. They are products from Mohawk, so they are of great quality and good warranties, as far as H2O warranties, no flooring has a full water warranty, no flooring is water PROOF, they are water resistant, if you spill aglass of liquid and wipe it up it will not stay or damage your laminate, if your dog drools, it will not damage the flooring, but COMMON SENSE will tell you that if you have a flood in your house no one will warrant that, but your insurance! Contact your local carpet one if you are looking for the country oak, brazilian cherry, or the maple, and good luck!

ok i have ready a lot of your comments and now im wondering if i should even invest in this product. my one sister-in-law got all her laminate wood from lowes and did her whole house. my other sister-in-law did her formal room and her office not too sure if they are going to do any more. the kitchen and entry and family room is in tile. i am getting ready to start a game room project and i was challenging laminate vs real wood for a 2nd story game room. i though i was ready to give into the liminate and now after reading this i’m not too sure because eventually i will need more to do my master and gust room as well, but i’m on such a tight budget i don’t know if it is worth the money i would be saving if i went with Costco or if i should just go through lowes and get the destressed armstrong beveled laminate flooring and do a special order one so i know i can still get it when i’m ready to do the last 2 rooms on my second level.

Costco’s (here in Minnesota at least) have the Harmonics line on sale until March 1st for $8off per box- no limit, with coupon. That’s $1.29 per sq ft. or $26.99 for 8mm+2mmpad attached. How can you beat that? Always over estimate measurements and then add 15-20% to your total- if even remotely considering another room- buy it now.

We just purchased this product and put the closed boxes in our living room to acclimate. I couldn’t stand the chemical odor after having in the room for just 1 hour. I checked with Harmonics 800 number. They sent me the formaldehyde rating which is not bad, but about double the ppm of a Green Indoor Air Certified products. They said the smell should go away about a week AFTER installing it in a well ventilated room. Well I don’t want to install it and find out that it makes me and my family sick. Anyone else had a problem with this product outgassing?

Also, they said that below 60% humidity the product could develop static. I leave my house at 40-50% humidity year-round to reduce mold (we’re in NC). Anyone had a problem with static charges with this product?

Finally, the stair nosing looks like it is an over lap product. I’m concerned dirt will collect behind the nose on the stairs and my kids will trip on the raised edge. Plus doing our stairs will add an additional 30% to the cost of the project. So I’m wondering if we should look for other alternatives for our stairs. For those who have installed it on their stairs, how this laminate has worked for you?

    Thanks for your input.

  387. Ron said

    Wendy,

The odor did go away a day or two after our installation. It doesn’t cause anymore static than most carpets. I would not use this on any stairs. We purchased some nice old oak flooring to cap our stairs we found on craigslist. It really added to the new floor, and finished off well.

I just installed the Harmoincs Flooring Harvest Oak in my house. All in all it went wonderfully. It looks fantastic, feel very high quality and you cannot see hardly any seams. My not-so-squared walls gave me the most trouble. The click in system made it very easy to install, just make sure to get a tapping block. Go to youtube.com to check out some various lamintate flooring install videos for good tips.

For moldings, I bought a stair nose (and I have to by a reducer) from Lumber Liqudators in French Oak. It is different enought that you couldn’t use whole panels, but some trim here and there is fine. I will put down white quarter round since it is easy to buy and cheap.

All in all, I give the flooring high marks for ease of install, beauty and durabilty.

I put down the Harmonics Oak laminate flooring from Costco last summer. It is beautiful and wears like iron. Very easy to keep clean. Looks very much like real wood flooring compared to other laminates I have put down in the past. Very easy to install. I have two very large Bernese Mountain dogs and they have not done any damage at all to the floor. I highly recommend this floor. A month ago Costco in Wayne, NJ had palates of all four colors of flooring.

I am fairly confident that the other colors can be matched as well. As to whether this is better than ordering the matching molding from Harmonics, that would depend on your ability to do the same. It is certainly much cheaper to purchase raw molding and stain it.

Select Maple vs. the new Skyline Maple
I did the large great room and kitchen in Select Maple four years ago, it has held up wonderfully with hard winters and country life, and a subfloor which was less than perfect. The flooring handled it all well and is easy to clean. Is the flange different on the new maple? Is the pattern at all close? There is enough of the old Select Maple to maybe do the entire bathroom, but that would leave nothing for repairs, if needed. If the bathroom were done in the newer maple pattern, would it visually be close enough? I see the width of the planks has changed from 7.5″ to 6 1/8″ Has anyone had the experience of abutting the old and the new?

I have also had great success finding molding pieces at home depot that match and work with Harmonics.

One other suggestion for people who are frustrated by chipping boards with the pull bar or the tapping block, try placing a small scrap of moisture barrier between the floor and the tool before you tap it. This virtually solved the problem for us.

Sunday, I laid the family room in Maple I had purchased several years ago from Costco. I had calculated the square footage wish some left over to spare, however, when calculating, I didn’t determine how that needed to work out in terms of the correct edges lining up, so I found myself short of being able to complete the last row of only 2″ wide, by about 4 planks. Now the product has changed in width and length.

I called Harmonics customer service number listed on the instructions and talked with a man that told me the old style was not available, but maybe I could check Craigslist. I asked whether the new form was compatible with the old form in terms of fit and look. He told me he didn’t know about the look, but for sure the tongue snap system was made differently and I would have to glue the new to the old, and to be careful that I didn’t glue it to the floor base.

Since I only needed a width af about 2″, I decided to go to Costco with a piece of the old style and see what I could find out. The store had Maple (now calling it Summer Maple) and a box had been broken into previously so I could take a piece out to check the fit and color. The color was a match and while the old style was made of 3 rows of boards, the new style was made of only 2 rows, but the width of the individual board within the planks seemed to be about the same.

Next, I checked the coupling mechanism. Since I only needed one row’s (16′ 7″) worth, I only needed to be concerned about the coupling along the long side, not the short end connections as they would couple to themselves. I first held up the sample of the old along side of a new plank and the tongue was slightly different, but the over all thickness was identical, except the new planks had the foam bonded to the planks instead of a separate sheet to lay down on the sub-floor first. The tongue and grove were so much alike that I decided to try coupling my old sample with the new plank, and surprise! they snapped together as if made to do so. So since this row was going along the wall, I didn’t really care if it wasn’t perfect, and bought a box to complete the job. I will have to remove the foam backing from the new planks before putting them with the old ones, but this seems to be a real solution to finish to project.

Those of you looking to complete your projects where you have come up short of the old style, should check this solution out. Best wishes!

    -J-

When I called the Harmonics support a few days ago about mating the old and new styles (see my post: September 1, 2009) I asked about the availability of old stock and they suggested looking on Craigslist for your area.

Following up from my post of using the old and the new Maple – While the coupling worked well in free air, we found a little difficulity in making the joint stay down and locked on the floor, but using a little force, and checking for interference from below, we were able to make it work well. Depending on the lighting, under the right lighting and very slight variation exists between to two, but since this is only about a 2 inch strip down the wall, it isn’t really noticeable unless someone points it out. I’d do it again if I had to, but knowing what I know now, if I could have realized that I might need more, I would have sold my older stock since people seem to be looking for it anyway, and replaced it with the new. The down side to that was that the original was purchased with the discount coupons and the new material is more expensive overall. Now I have 1/2 (5 of 9) of a box of the new left over to sell.

Has anyone installed this in a large room with a wood stove for winter heat? I have 72 boxes of older Premium Oak sitting here & am thinking I may have made a mistake in buying this laminate if it expands and contracts so much, especially with the drying of the wood stove heat. We are at about 4000 feet, get snow and have some humidity, but I am sure the stove reduces it significantly.

    • Hi, my boyfriend and I installed a Harmonic – (from Costco) floating laminate floor about a month ago. My boyfriend has experience as a general contractor so I felt comfortable with his doing the job. However, the floor makes this loud cracking noises pretty much all over the entire floor. It is the kind of laminate with a pre-attached underlayment all we did is put 6 mil plastic down over the concrete as a vapor barrier. The concrete seemed pretty level. No holidays and only one crack in it – (not wide). There was only one spot that seemed unlevel to the eye and feel. My boyfriend said that it wasn’t bad enough to warrant the time, trouble and expense to try and level the floor since it wasn’t that bad. I was worried but had no choice but to agree with him. I am lucky that he agreed to do the project since I have very little money and I needed to remove the 30 year old carpet due to respiratory issues and per doctor’s orders. So I found this laminate on sale and he said he would do the labor I thought that it was a wonderful thing that I could take care of it finally. Now I have a really creaky floor and my boyfriend says his installation was perfect. He did allow a lot of clearance around the entire floor and he did a beautiful job on putting on new baseboards. He says there is something wrong with the laminate. He doesn’t want to deal with it anymore. He said I’m just too picky. The floor does look beautiful but the clicking, popping, cracking noise drives me crazy and I’m afraid that under continued use it will damage the connections. The floor is floating no glue was used anywhere. Is this noise destroying the snap together connections? We also both checked the boards during the install. I found one board that had gone in a little crooked and he had to back track to that one and start over so I don’t thing there’s a plank off squared but it’s possible. My boyfriend will not pull up the floor to level it – he says I’m crazy. My question I guess is how long the floor will last before the connections fail. What will happen to the floor if I just keep walking on it with the clicking noise? Thanks for advice or info – I’d like to be prepared for what might happen especially since it looks like I won’t get any repair done until something bad -other than noise does happen to the floor.
    Thanks, Kim

    Attn: JMKSHOES@yahoo.com
I saw your request re the skyline maple. The most recent sale that ended Oct. 4 is when I purchased 15 boxes of the product. I purchased the floor only after
I contacted Harmonics Flooring to make sure the product was to be around at least 3 months and it wasn’t to be discontinued. On Oct. 2 my daughter found only 2 left on the shelf. She went to the service and found out it was discontinued. She called me immediately and I spoke with a manager at the service desk. She was kind enough to explain that she would contact the buyer to get what I needed to finish the job. She was able to give me a raincheck for the remaining 70 boxes I would need. She advised me it would be about 10 to 15 days before it would arrive. Since this floor was just discontinued within the 14 – 21 days, just go into to your local costco and speak to the manager. They should be able to assist you. I did find in CA Chico store(530-332-1751) on Oct. 2 had 160 boxes boxes. I was willing to drive there to pick them up (a 526 mile round trip for me) but after I had left the house I got the call from the manager at the Costco in Carson City NV (775-881-2503-ask for the manger re
obtaining The Skyline Harmonics Floor) and she asked how far out I was, I told her I was one hour out. I was so happy to hear her say turn around and come
home, I am having the floor shipped to our store direct from the buyer. Start with your local store manager, ask him to order it for you. If you have to, tell him/her to contact the buyer. Most Costco store managers are very helpful. I was told by the carson city manager that when the floor is discontinued they try to get every customer enough product to finish the job. You are still within that 30 days. I believe what happens is sometimes people take months to complete a job and by then sometimes the floor was discontinued months before and it is to late to get it from Costco. Good-Luck with your search. Contact me dw12@charter.net if you need any help. Work quickly.

    Hey JustJack!

$8 off per box at COSTCO until Feb28.

We’ve chosen Harmonics after a lot of investigation and just got two paletts of Harvest Oak at COSTCO Medford for a diagonal self-installation planning 20% drop. (This instant coupon plus no sales taxes sure made the tally nicer)

Now we’re looking for some nice matching or subtle-contrast baseboard moulding and edge trim. Ideas? Spill them here.

I installed about 35 boxes of Harvest Oak over a concrete slab and am very happy with it. Seems to be extremely durable. I did a “test” where I poured about a cup of water on two pieces of scrap hooked together and left it for about 2 days. …absolutely no apparent damage whatsoever. As far as scratch resistance it seems very durable. Try the “key test” to see for yourself.

    Downsides:

Its a lot colder than carpet.
Shows dust – buy a good mop
Transitions are expensive and look awful to me…I made my own.
installation is hard on the back and the knees

Overall I am very happy with it. My wife loves it (it was her idea). I made my own transitions out of red oak because the stuff you can buy at Lowe’s and HD looked very cheap to me. Anyone interested in custom made moldings and transitions? Just contact me at captainnice at hotmail dot com

I’m getting ready to purchase this laminate this weekend. I want to know the following – any feedback is appreciated:

    1. Is it easy to install?
    2. Is there a lot of cutting involved?
    3. How long did it take you?

Trying to get a handle on what I’m embarking on. I’ve done some repairs around the house but want to make sure I’m not getting into something that requires a trade.

  501. Hello, folks. I am happy to help with installation questions. I have installed a few thousand square feet of Harmonics in the past couple years. I have installed all manner of laminates for about 15 years. I am a licensed contractor who, frankly, enjoys his job. It gives me great pleasure to answer questions regarding Harmonics. It is, in my opinion, well worth the money and I rank its quality amongst the best laminates in the industry.
Do not hesitate to ask. I usually spend an hour or so answering questions at night.
    Good luck with your project!

Here are a few of my comments after I recently installed 25 boxes in my townhome. Its my first time installing this type of material, and I worked alone. Overall the installation went well, BUT it took much longer than “advertised”. Preparing my concrete subfloor required using a liquid leveler. Harmonics posts their specs and how to check if you will need to level the floor first. The locking edges on some of the new boards were already damaged when I opened the boxes. Costco replaced these.

During installation, I found there is quite a bit of measuring, cutting / trimming needed…usually required when I reached any wall. I used an electric table saw, so the cuts went pretty fast. This creates lots of sawdust, so I cut on an outside patio. Use spacers so that the boards will not end up touching the walls.

Pros: Floor looks great and makes the room look terrific. Nothing creaks or shifts. No water damage, so far. Cleaning the floor properly is very easy.
Cons: However, it does scratch and ding. The bottoms of shoes can occasionally pick up a small pebble from outside, and then walking on the laminate floor can install a ding in the surface. People can and will drop things onto the floor, as well. You may get a permanent nick to remember it by. Careful if anyone drops something sharp like scissors or a knife. Now have at least 3 small cuts this way, too.

And finally, I also have a nice feeling of pride and accomplishment. Glad I took on this project and very happy it is completed

Can anybody tell me if it is me or anybody else had problem install the flooring. I started to install fifty boxes of Harmonic Cottage Oak. I followed the instruction but I have a hell of time locking the length wise. I push it with20-40 degree angl but they don’t click in. when I use the block and tap in it takes many hard taps to finally lock in. It took me two hours for two rows of 17 foot long.
    Thanks

  508. To J Riley: Purchase an additional 5%-10% of the flooring. As for the moisture barrier, purchase 10-mil (or heavier) polyethelene sheeting from your local big box store. Since you are installing in a basement, overlap the seams of the sheeting 2 feet and tape them with 2″ clear tape. It is also a good idea run the plastic up the wall, install the baseboard as you would normally, then trim the sheeting flush with the top of the base.

If anyone is wondering about the durability of this flooring, here’s our experience. We have 1200 sq ft in the upstairs of our home (installed in 2008), it’s reduced our allergies so much over carpet. We have 3 kids and 3 English Bulldogs–and the floor looks brand new! Theresa, I’m interested in installing the Harmonics Antique Hickory Laminate in my home? I haven’t seen it in my local Costco for a few months…waiting for it to come in again. I think if your walls/cielings are light in color, the darker flooring will not look as dark.

  529. Nancy Nielsen said

Just finished installing about 400 sq. ft. of Harmonice Antique Hickory hand-scraped laminate flooring in our kitchen, entry and halls….and LOVE it, LOVE it!!!! Like an earlier post by Theresa on Apr. 2nd, we were concerned about it being too “dark”…so we bought one box at Costco and brought it home…laid out all 9 planks so we’d have a better sized area to judge the darkness.
Decided we HAD to have it even it it was going to be darker than we might want….and it IS lighter when all is installed! I’d be happy to send photos if there was a way to do so! It’s the perfect mid-brownish/red/golden shade, and the natural variation overall is completely consistant. There was NO need to mix boxes to achieve it..we used them right off the truck!

I’ve been searching for Costco Harmonics Cabin Maple laminate flooring for some time and could easily use 2 boxes?
I thought I tracked some down in a couple stores, but when I called about their listed inventory, they said they didn’t have any.
There is some new stuff in Costco that is close in color, but slightly darker (can’t remember…hickory or aspen maybe).
I believe the measurements are the same (at least the width) and it snaps together with the cabin maple.
I can live with the pattern being two strips wide instead of 3 and the built-in padding is okay too.
I’m needing it to replace the door jamb areas that I messed up.
But, I really just want the same type as before but I can’t seem find any anywhere.

Harmonics is been great for me. I have installed the maple in three different rooms and getting ready to do an install for a cancer patient. For those who might buy this product and cut it with a miter saw, don’t use you favorite 80 tooth carbide blade. This flooring is tough on saw blades. Go buy a cheap 60 tooth at harbor freight, cut away and enjoy your floors.

Harmonis coupon in latest mailer. $8 of fper box, no limit! Jsut bought 27 boxes of Warm Hazelnut, but after reading your posts, I see I need to get what I need ASAP! Does anyone suggest getting extra? Has anyone needed to replace a few pieces once they are down, due to damage? Is it nearly impossible? Can’t wait to get started installing, though I know I will be frustrated and over it the first day…..until I see the finished product. Philip, I am sure I will be in touch! Thanks.

Oh! one other question….I know many people in my area who have laminate flooring, and it seems to hold up well here in the high desert. But on the Harmonics page, it states you need to keep your humidity at 50%. WHY? Doesn’t humidity and moisture damage the flooring? We are at…24% right now, and easily dip into the teens as far as humidity goes. We are very dry. Why on earth would I want to constantly use a humidifier to keep my laminate flooring at a certain humidity, if I am allowing for expansion as directed?
