UPDATE: I was up too late, and didn’t notice that it’s update 6 for Java, not Java 6. This is just another update for Java 5… *sigh*
I’ve been up pretty late doing a little work and tying-up some last minute Christmas shopping, and out of the blue this Apple update window popped-up:

I’m super glad to finally see an Apple release of Java 6! I’ve been developing with SoyLatte lately and was going to write a quick tutorial on how to get it up and running on MacOS X, so I guess I don’t necessarily need to do that now. Although given Apple’s secrecy about Java releases and the future of Java on MacOS X, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have an alternative around.
I’m still on Tiger– I assume Leopard users are seeing this update too?

14|Dec|2007 1Sorry this isn’t a Java6 update Have a look at th notes. The key bit you’ve missed is This release updates J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_13. Unfortunately this is not Java6 but it is nice to see Apple continuing to support Java5 (and 1.4.2)

14|Dec|2007 2Unfortunately this isn’t Java 6.
Its release 6 of Java for Mac OS X which is an update to Java 5 and Java 1.4

14|Dec|2007 3Is this actaully Java 6? When you read the text it simply states there are new versions of Java 5 and Java 1.4.
100% supported
14|Dec|2007 4Hmmmm, i read “This release updates J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_13″ not java 1.6.0 just 1.5 release 6. or am i wrong?

14|Dec|2007 5Is this not just an update for java 1.4 and 1.5 but the 6th update?
no where is mentioned that it includes Java 1.6
John
14|Dec|2007 6No, only the Quicktime update is available for Leopard.

14|Dec|2007 7Better read before you post: This is not Java 6 but an update for Java 5 to version 1.5.0_13 and Java 1.4 to 1.4.2_16.

14|Dec|2007 8Sorry, but that’s just Release 6 of JDK 1.5.0…

14|Dec|2007 9Wait. It reads there:
Nothing about Java 6 there. Or can you confirm it installed Java 6 too?

14|Dec|2007 10Ups, look at the name of the package: 1.4 Release 6 and you know…

14|Dec|2007 12If you actually read your screen shot, it is an update of Java 4 and Java 5. It does not include Java 6. Just to make sure after installing the update, I went to the command line and typed java -version and sure enough, it was Java 5.

14|Dec|2007 13Thanks for getting my hopes up, then dashing them against the rocks…
This appears to just be the 6th release of Java for OS X. Read the fine print… It only updates the system to J2SE5U13.

14|Dec|2007 14Java is still a Sun Microsystems’ technology - nothing to do with Apple at all - thank Sun for finally updating it.

14|Dec|2007 15Java 6 is not included in its, its Apple’s “Release 6″ of Java 1.4.2 and Java 5.

14|Dec|2007 16Too bad it has absolutely nothing to do with Java 6. It’s just a 6th update for JDK 1.4.

14|Dec|2007 17Nope, this is not Java 6.
This is *sixth updater* and updates Java to 1.5.0_13 and 1.4.2_16 (it even says so in the description box). There is no Leopard version because Leopard already contains these versions.

14|Dec|2007 18Nope not for Leopard users yet!
http://docs.info.apple.com/art.....num=307051
Going to that URL gives Document not found??

14|Dec|2007 19That is just not true. Apple still take responsibility for “porting” Sun’s releases over to OSX.

14|Dec|2007 20I just checked my updater and sadly no Java 6 for the Leopard users.

14|Dec|2007 21I think what Peter is saying is that this isn’t Java 6, but Java 5 - at least according to the message window above.

14|Dec|2007 22This is release 6 of Java 5, not release 1 of Java 6… There is a difference…

14|Dec|2007 23This actually looks like just an update to Java 1.4.2 and Java 1.5 (according to the details of the update).
John Kuczynski
14|Dec|2007 24If you read carefully that is just an update for Java 1.4 and 5.0. Update 6 just means it’s the 6th update released from Apple for Java (1.5 I presume).

14|Dec|2007 25Hey Everyone,
I guess I should have just let it slip and read it better in the morning– it was really early and I had my hopes up about Java 6 finally being out. Sorry for the false alarm, that was dumb.
Anyhow, I’ve updated the entry accordingly. Damn.
