Currently, my main workstation at home is a Dell Dimension E520 which primarily runs Ubuntu 7.10, but I also dual boot into Windows XP for my photography hobby. One problem I had after upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10 from the default Ubuntu install which the E520 shipped with was getting sound to work. After trying several solutions in this forum thread, I finally got it working again.

Brandon, how much RAM do you have in that machine? And is it an E520 or E250? I just borrowed an E250 with 512Mb of RAM and Vista runs like crap on it. I booted to an ubuntu 7.10 Live CD and I could finally see some speed on it. I’m glad you posted this as I’ll be replacing Vista with XP/ubuntu this weekend.

I have a E520, which was one of the first actual Ubuntu workstations which Dell sold. (I put my money where my mouth was at and bought one when they officially started supporting Ubuntu). I have maxed it out with 4 GB of RAM.

Help!! My audio works great when I’m listening to my songs on iTunes, but I can’t hear anything on Youtube or when I play anything from the internet. Also, my kids computer games have no audio. I have a Dell computer that is 5 years old and it is running Windows XP. What SPECIFICALLY should I do?
