It seems like for at least a couple of years now, I've had problems when trying to login to newegg.com with Firefox. Across different installs of Firefox, on Windows, OS X, and Linux, etc.. no matter what I tried, Firefox just didn't work at all. Today after my typical google search session, I did find a couple of solutions which took quite awhile to track down. If you're having problems logging into to Newegg, give these a try:

Easy solution:

In the address bar of Firefox, type:

PLAIN TEXT

CODE:

about:config

Search or scroll down to the section called "network.http.sendRefererHeader" and change this value to 1.

For some reason, this was set to 2 on my machine.

Annoying solution:

Something is probably corrupt in your Firefox profile. Given that you're the type of person who shops at newegg, AND uses firefox, you can probably figure out how to create a new profile on your own.

Anyhow, give those a try and see if they work. It's nice to be able to shop on Newegg again with Firefox!

Between many machines at home, Virtual Machines, a work laptop, etc, I always seem to manage installing Firefox from scratch at least once a month. There are several add-ons that I pretty much require for Firefox to work for me, and I thought I should post them somewhere. I know that there have been at least 9342 billion Firefox add-on posts over the years, but this is more of a page for me to easily pull-up each time I install Firefox so I can quickly get all of the add-ons installed. However, maybe someone else will find this list useful or will run across an add-on which makes their interwebs experience even moar bettar.

Adblock Plus

Ever been to a Sys-Con site unprotected by this add-on? Bad idea. Personally I do white list some of the ad networks like Google Ads because I don't mind them, but this add-on does help a lot with the really annoying and hijacking type ads.

Adblock Filterset.G Updater

Keeps Adblock Plus up to date with fresh blocked URL's.

Add Bookmark Here

Makes bookmarking in folders and sub-folders much easier.

Allow Right Click

Not sure how effective this is, but what the heck.

BugMeNot

Fills in pre-registered account information at "registration required" sites.

ColorZilla

Allows you to get the RGB and Hex value of any color via a eye dropper.

del.icio.us "Classic"

I use del.icio.us as a huge but filtered bookmark repository, and this helps me with that.

DownloadThemAll!

Used to download files without having to click on each link.

FasterFox

Moar faster == moar bettar.

ForecastFox

A look at what's going on outside.

GMail Manager

Makes it easy to manage multiple GMail accounts, and also forces all GMail activity to happen over https.

Greasemonkey

Magic custom scripty goodness.

IE Tab

Allows you to load pages using IE within a Firefox Tab. Only works on Windows?

Image Zoom

A fun hack that allows you to enlarge and shrink images on the fly.

me.dium

- What I spend a large amount of time working on, and interesting way to connect with others and discover new sites on the interwebs to boot.

MeasureIt

Get pixel measurements of things on screen.

PDF Download

Ever click on a PDF and had your computer explode? This helps fix that.

TargetAlert

Displays a tiny icon representing content type for non-HTML links.

TwitterFox

I'm not completely sold on this plug-in yet because I've had issues with it, but Twitter hasn't been the most stable either.

VideoDownloader

Allows you to download videos from several popular sites including YouTube.

View formatted source

Good for web types.

View Source Chart

See above.

Web Developer

I'm sure you've already heard of this one too.

I think that's pretty much it. Let me know if you have any other Firefox add-ons I should look at or substitute. This will be a living list, so don't be let down if it changes over time.

I had the same problem again after upgrading to Firefox 1.5, but luckily I came across this great thread on how to fix Flash in Firefox.

If all else fails, I've also had good luck with uninstalling Flash and starting a new Firefox profile, and then reinstalling Flash. That is usually the last thing to try as it's quite a pain, but it does seem to work every time.

Over the past week or two, IBM has announced a couple of progressive items such as encouraging their employees to blog, as well as beginning to support Firefox in-house. Granted blogging has been around for at least 6 years now, but it's good to see a large corporation supporting both open standards and open communication.

I think one of the biggest things they've done in years is throw their weight behind Linux, and it seems like it's helped build them some momentum to moving towards a kinder, gentler IBM.

In the past week or so Firefox has been very slow and generally unpredictable on my machine. I've done a bit of everything to try and correct it-- reinstalled Firefox, upgraded to Windows XP SP2, upgraded my various security software (firewall, AV, anti-spyware), disabled various bits of software, etc. I tried a bit of everything and nothing seemed to work.

Eventually I started tracing the patterns of when Firefox would lock-up, and it was each time a new browser window was spawned. I started uninstalling all of the features which seemed like they might calling out to the intarweb or somehow interfering with network calls each time a new window was spawned, including Live HTTPHeaders, BugMeNot, GMail Notifier, and ForecastFox.. none of these seemed to help the problem.

Finally I did the thing I should of done from the beginning when I had these problems-- tried to see what Firefox wanted to connect to when it spawned a new window. I noticed an outgoing connection to nettripper.com each time a new window was spawned. I went to Google that domain, and as it turns out, that's the site for the SwitchProxy extention. I assume it's maybe just checking for an update or something, but I haven't actually looked at what it sends/recieves there, so I can't comment on it at the moment. Anyhow, I uninstalled the SwitchProxy extention, and suddenly Firefox doesn't suck again. What a pain!

How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

I was also reading somewhere (I don't remember where now.. I restarted Firefox to check out the above changes) that you shouldn't make the last "nglayout" change on OSX for some reason. But give it a try-- you'll like it! Of course this also increases the load on a given webserver as it gets more simultaneous requests per browser, but I'd say that the the speed improvement is worth it.
